    • Volatile components in essence AB6 were separated by the method of simultaneous distillation and extraction,and determined by GC-MS. Fifteen components,amounting to 80.5% of the total (solvent peaks eliminated) were identified,among which 4 main components were determined in samples taken from 10 different batches of products,giving values of RSD′s in the range of 2.2% to 6.1%. A database of qualified sample was established based on the experimental data obtained. Qualified samples of AB6 essence were effectively differentiated from samples of AB6 essence admixed with solvents by applying the principle component projection analysis. More the solvents admixed,the more will be the distance to keep them apart. In the mean time,remarkable differences were also observed among different kinds of essence. It was proved that quality control of essence used in cigarette manufacturing could be achieved by the application of GC-MS analysis as well as the principle component projection analysis.
